Absolutely a must, is the ride from Sedona through Oak Creek Canyon to Flagstaff. Make time to either head northwest to the Grand Canyon on Highway 180, or ride up Highways 89 and 160 to Monument Valley near Four Corners for a taste of the rugged old west. Several of John Wayne's famous old west cowboy movies were filmed on location in Monument Valley and the Sedona area. If you take the long ride out to Monument Valley, plan to stay overnight in Kayenta.
Ride back to Sedona venture out again to ride the longest remaining stretch of Route 66, the historic "Mother Road" that ran from Chicago to the Santa Monica Pier in California. Take I-40 west to Seligman for your adventure into another era where there are diners, roadside cafes, true mid-century motels and other remnants of days gone by. It is a long but worthwhile ride capturing the spirit of Route 66 with memorabilia available at most stops along the way.
Spend another night in Sedona for a well deserved rest and a late start after a hearty breakfast and plan to visit the historic mining town of Jerome with its famous Spirit Room, 100-mile views of Sedona's red rocks and canyons and the Verde Valley. Return to Sedona for more relaxation, or spend the day riding the twisting switchbacks and winding road over Mingus mountain, south on Highway 89A through Prescott and on to Wickenburg, Arizona.
